Autoflowering is about TIMING: the plant blooms on age rather than daylength. A seed can be either, both, or neither. If your season is short because frost closes it, timing is your constraint and you want an autoflower.

A fridge works provided the container is genuinely airtight — what kills viability is repeated condensation as seed moves between warm and cold, not the cold itself. Never freeze. Write the strain and the date on the container; a year later nobody remembers.

It depends entirely on where you are, which is why one national answer would be wrong. On the humid KwaZulu-Natal coast and through the Lowveld, humidity rather than heat is the limit — pick open, airy flower structure and mould resistance. In the Western Cape, flowering falls in a dry summer and almost anything finishes; plan around the south-easter instead. On the Highveld, the frost date decides, so pick on finishing speed.
