Cannabis Strain Finder Tool

Find the Right Cannabis Seeds for Where You Grow

Six questions about where you grow, what you are growing in, and how much you have done before. The shortlist comes back ranked, in under a minute.

Climate is the part most seed guides skip. Something that finishes comfortably through a dry Western Cape summer can rot on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and a long-season plant that suits the Lowveld may never finish on the Highveld ahead of frost. This tool asks for your province first, then narrows by structure, potency and flavour β€” including autoflowering seeds if you would rather not run a light cycle at all.

Not sure where to start? Answer six questions and get a ranked shortlist drawn from 1,677 varieties, with the reason each one matched.

Step 1 of 60%

What are you hoping it does?

Choose as many as fit. The shortlist is scored against all of them.

How to Choose the Right Cannabis Strain

1,677 varieties is more than anyone can sensibly browse. The quiz narrows it in about a minute β€” but if you would rather work it out yourself, these are the factors that actually decide it:

Indica vs Sativa

Indica leans short, dense and physical. Sativa leans tall, late and heady. Hybrids land between the two.

THC vs CBD

High THC hits hardest. CBD-dominant lines carry very little THC, so the effect stays mild.

Grow Difficulty

Never done this? Begin with autoflowers: they set their own schedule and absorb a lot of error.

Indoor vs Outdoor

Indoors you want something short. Outdoors you want something that takes weather. The quiz asks which you are doing.

Cannabis Strain Finder FAQs

Questions growers ask when deciding what to plant, and how the shortlist is put together.

Which seeds should I start with if I have never grown before?
Autoflowering varieties, usually. They flower on age rather than on a light cycle, which matters when load-shedding makes a timer unreliable. Northern Lights, Blue Dream and White Widow all have autoflowering versions and all forgive an uneven first attempt.
When should I be planting outdoors in South Africa?
September through November across most of the country, cutting between March and May. On the Highveld, start under cover in early September so plants are established by midsummer and finished before the first frost. In the Western Cape flowering falls in the dry half of the year, which is the most forgiving outdoor timing anywhere in the country.
Does it matter that I am in KwaZulu-Natal rather than Gauteng?
Enough to change what you should plant. The KwaZulu-Natal coast stays humid right through summer, so open-structured plants that let air move through the canopy hold up better than dense ones. The Highveld is dry but bracketed by frost, so finishing early counts for more than mould resistance does. That is why the quiz asks for your province before anything else.
How quickly can I get to harvest?
Autoflowers generally run 8 to 10 weeks from germination. Photoperiod plants take longer because you decide when flowering starts β€” which also means you choose the harvest date rather than the genetics choosing it for you.
Is the indica or sativa label actually useful?
As a description of how the plant grows, yes. Indica-leaning plants tend to be shorter, denser and quicker to finish; sativa-leaning ones taller and later. As a prediction of effect it is far looser than the labels imply. For deciding whether something fits your space and your season, the structure is the part worth reading.
