Flo Feminised

South Africa is really two growing countries, and Flo does not behave the same way in both. North and east of the escarpment the rain arrives in summer, so this 30/70 sativa does its flowering while the air is still heavy; in the Western Cape the rain comes in winter, so the same plant ripens through a dry autumn instead. An open sativa canopy is the right structure for a humid coast, which is roughly how Durban Poison ended up the shape it is — air moves through the plant instead of sitting in it, and the botrytis pressure that ruins denser cultivars through a KwaZulu-Natal February mostly passes it by. The trade-off is the calendar. A ~7 weeks (fully mature by week seven of flowering, indoor) bloom on the Highveld has to start early, which in practice means seedlings out by October, or the closing weeks run into frost. pinene expression is strongest where day-to-night swings exceed 10°C, and at altitude that is simply what autumn does.

Outdoors, the province decides which problem you are actually solving.

KwaZulu-Natal and the subtropical coast. Humidity rather than heat is the limiting factor here. Whitefly and thrips peak from December through February, so introduce predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) before you see damage rather than after it. Airflow under the lower canopy matters more on this coast than anywhere else in the country.

The Highveld — Gauteng, Free State, North West. Frost closes the window at both ends. That suits a ~7 weeks (fully mature by week seven of flowering, indoor) bloom, provided you start seeds under cover by early September and bank the vegetative growth before the December solstice. Above 1 400 m the ultraviolet index is high enough to push trichome production, but harden transplants off slowly or they bleach.

Western Cape. Flowering falls in the dry half of the year, which makes this the most forgiving outdoor condition in the country for Flo — the mould pressure that shapes every other region never arrives. The south-easter is your problem instead: weeks of sustained summer wind through December and January will tear an unstaked plant apart.

Indoors the location stops mattering and the numbers take over. Through a summer sitting above 30°C ambient, run lights overnight on a 6pm-6am cycle and you sidestep most heat stress without paying for cooling. Hold humidity at 55-65% in veg and 40-50% once flowers set; EC 1.0-1.4 vegetative, 1.6-2.0 at peak bloom; pH between 5.8 and 6.3 depending on medium.

Difficulty: medium. In flower for ~7 weeks (fully mature by week seven of flowering, indoor). Stands Medium. Indoors it returns 400 g/m². Outdoors, 550 g/plant a plant.

The first thing Flo does at 14% THC is arrive clean and resinous, like a pine plantation in the mist belt after rain. The energetic, happy, uplifted effects follow within minutes, as a sharpening rather than a lift: colour reads more saturated, music holds more detail, conversation wanders further than it would have. It runs two to three hours on a plateau instead of a peak, so nothing drops out from under you at the end. Limonene sits underneath all of it, adding a brightness that offsets any heaviness.

Leading with Pinene, then Limonene, and Caryophyllene underneath. Read across a cure, these three compounds do not stay in the same order. Fresh off the dry, pinene leads. After three or four weeks in sealed glass at 16-18°C the caryophyllene undertone comes up and the bouquet gains a layer it did not have at harvest. Vaporising between 180°C and 195°C captures the widest span of them — run it hotter and the volatile caryophyllene molecules are the first thing you lose.

Who does well with Flo? Indoor growers who want the harvest date to be their decision. Outdoor growers who want to choose the moment flowering starts. Anyone with the room and the patience to veg it properly before flipping. It is rated medium, which in practice means a moderate learning curve that rewards attention without needing laboratory conditions.
